Comparison: State vs. Federal
• Rules. Rhode Island has its own standards and procedures for the cleanup of hazardous waste in the state. In addition, Rhode Island has its own cleanup fund called the Environmental Response Fund II. The federal Superfund rules also apply in Rhode Island. All response actions that require treatment of hazardous waste must be preapproved by DEM. In addition, responsibilities must submit a Remedial Action Work Plan documenting how remedial action will be implemented.
