Rules. North Carolina has adopted the federal drinking water standards by reference as outlined in the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The state also has additional requirements and programs.

The state's drinking water program requires that U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved performance evaluation samples be analyzed by laboratories annually for certification. North Carolina has also adopted the federal maximum contaminant level (MCL) for arsenic of 0.010 milligrams per liter (mg/L) and has specified that certified laboratories must report arsenic down to levels at least as low as 0.005 mg/L.
