• Rules. Unlike the federal rules, the underground injection of hazardous waste for treatment, storage, or disposal is prohibited throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Many other states do allow underground injection wells to be used for hazardous waste disposal. Always determine whether a particular state allows disposal by underground injection before shipping waste off-site for disposal.
• Administration and enforcement. DEQ administers and enforces the disposal prohibition in Virginia. EPA Region 3 administers the Class II underground injection control programs in the state.
