Holidays that fall on Sunday are observed on the following Monday. Holidays falling on Saturday are observed on the previous Friday (AL Code Sec. 1-3-8).
Mobile and Baldwin counties also observe the day of Mardi Gras as a holiday, and all state offices in those counties are closed. State employees who work outside of Mobile and Baldwin counties receive one personal leave day each year in lieu of a paid day off on Mardi Gras.
Under Alabama law, state offices are closed on the holidays noted, and state employees are entitled to paid days off on those days.
Private employers are not required by law to provide any holidays off, either with or without pay. No Alabama law requires employers to:
• Pay employees a premium for work on holidays.
• Count unworked hours on holidays as “hours worked” when computing overtime.
However, many Alabama employers do observe some or all of these practices.
