Maine Holidays: What you need to know

Maine observes the following as official holidays (ME Rev. Stat. Tit. 4 Sec. 1051):

January 1 New Year's Day
Third Monday in January Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Third Monday in February Washington's Birthday
Third Monday in April Patriot's Day
Last Monday in May (or May 30, if designated by the federal government) Memorial Day
July 4 Independence Day
First Monday in September Labor Day
Second Monday in October Columbus Day
November 11 Veterans Day
Fourth Thursday in November Thanksgiving
Day after Thanksgiving Friday after Thanksgiving
December 25 Christmas Day
If a holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday.
Large retail stores (with over 5,000 square feet of selling space) may not be open on Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter (ME Rev. Stat. Tit. 17 Sec. 3204). Additionally, motor vehicle sales are prohibited on Sundays (ME Rev. Stat. Tit. 17 Sec. 3203).
State offices are closed and state employees are entitled to the days noted as days off with pay. A state employee who is required to work on a holiday receives compensatory time off at the mutual convenience of the employee and employer.
There is nothing in Maine law that requires private employers to provide paid holidays to their employees; however, most employers in Maine provide their employees with seven paid holidays. Many employers provide premium pay to employees who work on holidays, or count the unworked hours on holidays as "hours worked" when computing overtime.
