Oregon Holidays: What you need to know

December 25 Christmas Day
The governor or president may appoint additional holidays.
If a holiday falls on Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday. If a holiday falls on Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday (OR Rev. Stat. Sec. 187.010).
Private employers generally are not obligated by state law to provide any holidays as paid (or unpaid) days off; however, most Oregon employers do observe at least six paid holidays.
Also, private employers are not required to:
• Pay premium pay to employees who work on holidays.
• Pay employees for unworked hours on holidays.
• Count unworked hours on holidays as hours worked when computing overtime.
However, paid holidays promised to employees, either orally or in employee handbooks, must be granted. Oregon courts have ruled that such promises are legally enforceable.
Employees who are veterans may take Veterans Day off if they provide the employer with 21 days' notice and documentation showing veteran status. The employer can deny the time off if it would cause it to "experience significant economic or operational disruption, or undue hardship." Within 14 calendar days of Veterans Day, the employer must inform the employee whether he or she may take off on the holiday and, if so, whether the time off will be paid or unpaid.
