Texas Holidays: What you need to know

Texas observes the following as official holidays (TX Gov. Code Sec. 662.003):

January 19 Confederate Heroes Day State
Third Monday in January Martin Luther King Jr. Day National
Third Monday in February Presidents' Day National
March 2 Texas Independence Day State
April 21 San Jacinto Day State
Last Monday in May Memorial Day National
June 19 Emancipation Day State
July 4 Independence Day National
August 27 Lyndon Baines Johnson Day State
First Monday in September Labor Day National
November 11 Veterans Day National
Fourth Thursday in November Thanksgiving Day National
Friday after Thanksgiving Day State
December 25 Christmas Day National
December 24 and 26 Days before and after Christmas State
Optional holidays include the days on which Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, or Good Friday fall (TX Gov. Code Sec. 662.003).
National holidays. Public offices may be closed and Texas government employees are entitled to days noted as paid days off on state and national holidays.
State holidays. On all state holidays, except those on Friday after Thanksgiving and December 24th and December 26th, there must be enough employees at work in state offices so that the agency's public business may be conducted. A state employee who works on one of these days will receive another day off in compensation. State employees may take off Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, or Good Friday in place of any observed holiday listed.
Private employers are not obligated by state law to provide any holidays as paid (or unpaid) days off.
