Vermont Holidays: What you need to know

Vermont observes several official holidays (VT Stat. Tit. 1 Sec. 371et seq.):

State employers. If a holiday falls on Sunday, state departments, agencies, and offices observe it on the following Monday. If a holiday falls on Saturday, state departments, agencies, and offices observe it on the preceding Friday. State offices may be closed and state employees entitled to the holidays noted as paid days off, depending upon collective bargaining agreements under the State Employees Labor Relations Act between the state (as employer) and employees (VT Stat. Tit. 1 Sec. 371, Tit. 3 Sec. 904).
Private employers. Private employers are not required by state law to provide any holidays as paid (or unpaid) days off. However, many Vermont employers do grant at least six paid holidays.
No Vermont law requires that employers:
• Pay premium pay to employees who work on holidays.
• Pay employees for unworked hours on holidays.
• Count unworked hours on holidays as “hours worked” when computing overtime.
However, many Vermont employers do provide one or more of these benefits.
Many employers offer a bank of “floating” holidays in full or partial replacement of a system of company-designated holidays. ...
