In addition to the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), some states have their own comprehensive family leave laws that may also require employers to grant employees time off for the birth or adoption of a child or to care for a family member with a serious illness.
However, Louisiana does not have such a law.
Maternity, pregnancy, and parental leave.

School activities leave. Under the state's School and Daycare Conference and Activities Leave Act, an employer may grant an employee leave from work of up to a total of 16 hours in any 12-month period to attend, observe, or participate in conferences or classroom activities related to the employee's dependent children for whom he or she is the legal guardian.
The employee may take this leave if the conferences or classroom activities cannot be reasonably scheduled during the employee's nonworking hours.
Employees must give reasonable notice to their employer before the leave and make a reasonable effort to schedule the leave so as not to unduly disrupt the operations of the employer.
The law does not require employers to pay an employee for this leave. However, an employee must be allowed to substitute any accrued vacation time or other appropriate paid leave for any leave taken under this law (LA Code Sec. 23:1015 et seq.).
