Nebraska Life Insurance: What you need to know

Employers have no obligation under Nebraska law to offer life insurance to their employees. However, if group life insurance is among the benefits offered to workers, certain minimum requirements must be satisfied (NE Rev. Stat. Sec. 44-1601).

Group characteristics. The employees eligible for coverage must include all the employer's employees or all those belonging to a particular class or classes. Employees of subsidiary and affiliated companies, as well as retired employees, former employees, and directors of a corporate employer may be included in the group.
Beneficiary. The employee may name anyone except the employer as beneficiary.
Employer/employee contributions. Employers are not required to make a contribution toward the cost of group insurance. If the employer does pay the entire cost, all employees in the eligible class (except those who reject the coverage in writing and those for whom evidence of individual insurability is not satisfactory) must be covered by the policy.
Family coverage. Group coverage may be extended to employees' spouses and dependent children. The employer may contribute towards this coverage, but is not required to do so. If the employer pays the full cost of the spouse's and dependent child's coverage, the policy must cover the spouses and dependent children of all eligible employees, or any class or classes of employees, except any as to whom evidence of individual insurability is not satisfactory to the insurer. The amount of insurance for any covered spouse or dependent child under the policy may not exceed 50 percent of the amount of insurance for which the employee or member is insured.
