Minnesota Minimum Wage: What you need to know

The following employees are not covered by the state minimum wage law (MN Stat. Sec. 177.24):
• Certain salaried agricultural workers and most minors employed in agriculture
• Elected officials
• Some firefighters and police officers
• Cab drivers
• Babysitters
• Employees of nonprofit seasonal camps and seasonal employees at fairs, carnivals, circuses, and ski facilities
• Minors employed part-time in municipal recreation programs
• State conservation officers
• Individuals covered by the federal Department of Transportation
• Seafarers
• Outside sales representatives
• Resident employees of authorized county home schools
• Members of religious orders serving nonprofit, church-run institutions
In addition, the state provides exemptions for certain white-collar personnel. Additional information about these occupations is available.
The state may issue permits allowing employment at wages below the minimum for learners and apprentices. The permit may include limitations on the number of people that may be so employed by an employer, on the length of any learning period, and on the occupations in which such employees are permitted to work (MN Stat. Sec. 177.28).
The state may issue permits allowing employment at wages below the minimum for employees whose earning capacity is impaired by a disability. If an individual with a disability has similar experience, skill, and work performance as a person without a disability, the individual must be paid an equal wage.
