Kansas Death of Employee: What you need to know

Unless an employer has been notified of probate proceedings, it may pay wages due a deceased employee to any of the following individuals who request payment (in descending order of preference):
• Spouse,
• Children 18 years of age or older in equal shares,
• Father, mother, sisters, and brothers in equal shares, or
• The person to whom funeral expenses are due.
The employer should require that the person or persons requesting the payment provide identification and give a receipt for the payment (KS Stat. Sec. 44-318). Additional information about handling the death of an employee in the workplace is available. .
