The Vermont Occupational Safety and Health Administration has adopted federal requirements for exit routes, emergency action plans, and fire prevention plans that address the maintenance and operational features needed to safely evacuate employees from a facility (29 CFR 1910.34 et seq. ). Every workplace in Vermont is covered by this rule except vehicles. Under the rule:
• Lighting and marking must be adequate and appropriate.
• Fire retardant properties of paints or solutions must be maintained.
• An alarm system must be operable and have a distinctive signal to warn employees of fire or other emergencies.
The rule has specific requirements for workplace exit doors and exit routes. There are also specific requirements for fire control systems (sprinklers).
