Vermont Facilities: What you need to know

The Vermont Occupational Safety and Health Administration has adopted federal requirements for exit routes, emergency action plans, and fire prevention plans that address the maintenance and operational features needed to safely evacuate employees from a facility (29 CFR 1910.34 et seq. ). Every workplace in Vermont is covered by this rule except vehicles. Under the rule:

• Lighting and marking must be adequate and appropriate.
• Fire retardant properties of paints or solutions must be maintained.
• An alarm system must be operable and have a distinctive signal to warn employees of fire or other emergencies.
The rule has specific requirements for workplace exit doors and exit routes. There are also specific requirements for fire control systems (sprinklers).
The Vermont Department of Labor's Project WorkSAFE helps employers maintain safe and healthful workplaces by helping to identify health hazards, such as toxic air contaminants and excessive noise, and physical hazards, such as fire; electrical; machine; and slip, trip, and fall hazards.

.Smoking. The Vermont Workplace Smoking Act prohibits smoking in all enclosed private and public workplaces and all government buildings to ensure that they are 100 percent free of tobacco smoke (Tit. 18 Sec. 1421et seq.). Designated smoking areas are not permitted. Use of e-cigarettes is prohibited in schools and childcare facilities and on their grounds.
