Mississippi Records: What you need to know

Employers should keep in mind that the time period for retaining records set forth in the various statutes are minimums. Since these records are critical to the employer if its compliance with federal or state law is questioned or if it must defend itself against employment-related litigation, employers may want to retain employment-related records for longer periods. Moreover, the penalties for not keeping required records may be severe.
Covered employers. All employers are subject to the recordkeeping requirements.
Required. Employers are required to keep on file an affidavit from the parents of each worker under the age of 16 and a certificate from the school superintendent or principal, indicating the child's age, school grade, last school attended, and present teacher. Employers also must keep a complete register of all their minor employee affidavits, showing all the facts contained in them. For minors between the ages of 14 and 16 employed in mills, canneries (except for fruit or vegetable canneries), workshops, stores, factories, or manufacturing facilities, employers must keep a parental affidavit and certificate from the superintendent or principal of the child's school stating ...
