North Carolina First Aid: What you need to know

The level of first-aid services maintained will depend on the hazards normally present at the worksite. Both the law and good common sense require at least a basic level of readiness. North Carolina has its own Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) rules. The state Act's first-aid requirements in the workplace are identical to those of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act). Therefore, the federal OSH Act's standards govern workplace first-aid requirements in the private and public sectors. There is a detailed discussion of workplace first-aid requirements.

A person who provides emergency care voluntarily (i.e., without expectation of compensation or pay) in good faith at the scene of an emergency or accident is immune from civil liability for acts they may have performed (or omitted) in providing such emergency care; there is an exception if these acts or omissions amount to willful or wanton negligence. This immunity from liability does not extend to those whose profession it is to render emergency care for pay or with the expectation of being paid (NC Gen. Stat. Sec. 90-21.14).
