The Virginia Human Rights Act (VHRA)prohibits conduct that violates any Virginia or federal statute or regulation governing discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, age (over 40 years), marital status, or disability.
Advertisements or job listings that specify a preference with regard to any of these characteristics violate the Act (VA Code Sec. 2.2-3901).
The VHRA covers employers with more than 5 but fewer than 15 employees. Employers with 15 or more employees are covered by federal antidiscrimination statutes, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
