Louisiana Apprenticeship Training: What you need to know

An apprenticeship is a program that combines classroom instruction or education with on-the-job training under the close supervision of a skilled and experienced journeyworker in a craft, trade, or profession. In Louisiana, the Apprenticeship Division of the state Workforce Commission oversees the state's apprenticeship program. Participation in the Louisiana program is voluntary, but once involved, participants must comply with federal and state standards and rules (LA Rev. Stat. Sec. 23:381 et seq.).

Typically, an individual employer will sponsor an apprenticeship, working with the Apprenticeship Division. In some cases, an association of employers or an organization of employees will enter into an apprentice agreement. The association or organization agrees to use its best efforts to obtain employment and training for the apprentice with one or more employers who will accept full responsibility for all employment and training set forth in the agreement (LA Rev. Stat. Sec. 23:389).
The director of apprenticeship, working with the apprenticeship council, is authorized to set up the conditions and training standards for apprenticeship agreements, as well as issue certificates of completion of an apprenticeship program (LA Rev. Stat. Sec. 23:384). In Louisiana, an apprentice must be at least 16 years old, be employed to learn an apprenticeable occupation, and have entered into an agreement with a sponsor to provide at least 2,000 hours of reasonably continuous employment (LA Rev.
