South Dakota Training: What you need to know

The federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), which supersedes the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) and amended the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act, the Wagner-Peyser Act, and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, is a federal workforce development law that provides for state and federal employment, education, job training, and support services. The law is designed to help jobseekers access employment, education, training, and support services and to match employers with the skilled workers they need.

Each state must establish a one-stop training system with at least one center in each local area that provides core services, including determination of eligibility, outreach, intake and orientation, skill level assessment, case management assistance, job search and placement, information regarding job opportunities, and information about the performance of local providers.
Employers that train workers through this system are eligible for grants, significant tax credits, and other benefits.
The South Dakota Workforce Development Council (WDC) oversees implementation of workforce training programs in South Dakota funded by the WIA. Members of the WDC represent various business, labor, and education interests. A majority of its members are from the private sector. Council membership also includes representatives of the state departments of Labor, Education, Human Services, Tourism and State Development, and the Board of Regents.
