The state uses the Emergency Alert System of radio and television stations to broadcast emergency information and also overrides cable television stations to communicate information.

Counties use siren systems to warn people of impending emergencies, including tornadoes, hazardous material spills, and nuclear plant releases.
Weather information is broadcast on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather station frequency 162.450.
The Michigan Fire Prevention Act (MI Comp. Laws. Sec. 29.19) recommends that a minimum of six fire drills/evacuation drills be held each year in public buildings. The Act requires that schools and colleges hold eight drills per year. In public buildings where the majority of occupants are visitors, regular employees should be trained in evacuation procedures, which can be practiced during drills, so that they may direct other occupants out of the facility.
The Fire Prevention Act also requires that tornado safety drills be held in schools, public buildings, and places where the public gathers. A statewide tornado drill is held annually in late March/early April.
