Under Texas law, an emergency/disaster is defined as an "occurrence or imminent threat of widespread or severe damage, injury, or loss of life or property from a natural or man-made cause." Included in the definition are fires, floods, earthquakes, wind storms, volcanic action, epidemics, infestations, air and water contamination, explosions, chemical spills, riots, hostile military or paramilitary actions, or other public calamities requiring emergency action. The Texas Warning System , operated by the Governor's Division of Emergency Management, is responsible for dissemination of emergency warnings and instructions to Area Warning Centers. The state Department of Public Safety, Texas Highway Patrol, local agencies, and media outlets are notified of weather and other state and local emergencies via several redundant means of communications. Contact your local government for specific information; some counties and municipalities have their own notification programs.
211 Texas. During an emergency in the state, the 211 Texas 24/7 help line, which accesses state agencies, activates a special Option #4 to transfer callers directly to disaster-related information. When Option #4 is activated for disaster response, it is the first option that a caller hears.
