South Carolina Forklifts: What you need to know

South Carolina has adopted the federal OSHA regulations on forklifts in general industry workplaces by reference (R. 71 Subarticle 6), and has adopted requirements for interior structural fire fighting that are more detailed than federal rules. No additional state requirements apply.

The South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation/Occupational Safety and Health Administration enforces the safety and health rules for private and public sector workplaces in the state.

R. 71 Subarticle 6

Whenever a truck is equipped with vertical only or vertical and horizontal controls for a lifting carriage or forks for lifting personnel, the following additional precautions must be taken for the protection of personnel being elevated:

  • Use a safety platform firmly secured to the lifting carriage and/or forks.
  • Provide a means for personnel on the platform to shut off power to the truck.
  • Provide protection from falling objects.
