Illinois does not have a federally approved occupational safety and health regulatory program. Consequently, federal occupational safety and health standards govern private sector workplaces in the state.
The state has adopted by reference the federal safety and health standards for material handling in public sector (state, county, and local government facilities, volunteer fire departments, and school districts) workplaces (56 IL Admin. Code 350.300).
The U.S. Department of Labor/Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) administers and enforces federal workplace safety and health requirements in private sector workplaces. The Illinois Department of Labor/Division of Safety Inspection and Education administers safety and health rules for public sector workplaces.
