The state has adopted the federal standard for asbestos exposure in general industry for brake and clutch repair, custodial work, and the manufacture of asbestos-containing products (HAR 12-206-1). The state has incorporated the federal standards for protecting the safety and health of employees during asbestos abatement activities (alteration, repair, renovation, and demolition), including certification requirements (HAR 12-145.1-1).
The Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR) administers and enforces the asbestos exposure and abatement requirements in Hawaii.
