Rhode Island does not have a federally approved occupational safety and health regulatory program for the state; therefore, private sector workplaces must comply with federal occupational safety and health standards.
The state has adopted by reference the federal hazardous waste operations and emergency response (HAZWOPER) rules for public sector employers (state, county, and local government agencies and school systems) in general industry and construction (RI Rules and Regulations 16.050.002 and 16.050.003).
The U.S. Department of Labor/Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) administers and enforces federal workplace safety and health requirements in private sector workplaces in the state. The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training/Division of Occupational Safety administers occupational safety and health rules in public sector workplaces.
