Wisconsin does not have a federally approved occupational safety and health regulatory program for the state; therefore, private sector workplaces must comply with federal occupational safety and health standards.
Wisconsin’s safety and health rules govern public sector (state and local government offices and operations) workplaces. The state has adopted the federal hazardous waste operations and emergency response (HAZWOPER) rules by reference (SPS 332.50).
The U.S. Department of Labor/Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) administers and enforces federal workplace safety and health requirements in private sector workplaces. The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) administers the state workplace safety and health rules for public sector workplaces.
