Private sector employers (private businesses and nonprofit organizations) in Maine are governed by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act) and OSHA’s hazard communication regulations. Maine has a federally approved occupational safety and health regulatory program that governs public sector employers (government offices and operations).
Maine has adopted by reference the federal Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) for general employment and construction employment in the public sector.
OSHA administers and enforces the HCS requirements for private sector workplaces in Maine. The Maine Department of Labor administers and enforces the HCS requirements for public sector workplaces.
