Comparison: State vs. Federal
Iowa is a “state plan” state; that is, it has a federally approved occupational safety and health regulatory program. The Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Act governs occupational safety and health, including safety data sheet (SDS) requirements, in both the public and private sector workplaces. Iowa has adopted the federal SDS requirements by reference. See the national SDS analysis for more information.
The Iowa Workforce Development administers and enforces the occupational safety and health in both the public and private sector workplaces.
