Alaska does not have its own ergonomics requirements for reducing musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace. Employers must, however, reduce the hazards from injury or illness related to a musculoskeletal disorder under the state General Duty Clause (AK Stat. 18.60.075). Federal OSHA has developed voluntary ergonomics guidelines for nursing homes, retail grocery stores, and poultry processing, and is in the process of issuing guidelines for several other industries. OSHA has also appointed ergonomics coordinators in each of the 10 OSHA regions to assist compliance officers in conducting inspections and documenting hazards associated with musculoskeletal disorders.
