Idaho does not have a federally approved occupational safety and health regulatory program for the state; therefore, private sector workplaces must comply with the federal occupational safety and health standards.
The state has adopted safety and health rules for public sector (state and local government offices and operations) workplaces that are substantially less stringent than federal rules (ID Admin. Code 17.10.01). The state has also adopted voluntary safety and health compliance guidelines for personal protective equipment in public sector workplaces; state safety and health inspectors use the guidelines as a resource for inspecting public sector workplaces (ID Admin. Code 17.10.01.006).
The U.S. Department of Labor/Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) administers and enforces federal workplace safety and health requirements in private sector workplaces in the state. The Idaho Division of Building Safety administers the voluntary compliance program for public sector workplaces.
