California Respiratory Protection: What you need to know

California has adopted respiratory protection rules in general industry workplaces that mirror federal rules with one exception for filtering facepiece respirators for protection against M. Tuberculosis. Cal/OSHA administers and enforces workplace safety and health rules in California.

For the use of filtering facepiece respirators for protection agains M. Tuberculosis, employers may rely on a medical evaluation completed prior to October 18, 2004, to meet the requirement for initial medical evaluation, if:

  • The evaluation consisted of a questionnaire, medical examination, or both, evaluated or conducted by a physician or other licensed healthcare professional (PLHCP).
  • The employer obtained a written statement from the evaluating PLHCP that the employee is medically able to use a respirator.
