Comparison: State vs. Federal
• Rules. Iowa is a "state plan" state; that is, it has a federally approved occupational safety and health regulatory program that covers both private and public sector (state and local government) workplaces. The state has adopted the federal requirements for workplace safety and health penalties by reference but has not yet updated its penalty amounts to match the August 2016 federal OSHA penalty increase.
• Administration and enforcement. IWD administers and enforces occupational safety and health requirements in Iowa.
