The state rules for agency inspections of public sector workplaces are similar to, but less detailed than, the corresponding federal rules. The state has adopted the federal rules for self-inspection by reference.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) enforces safety and health inspection requirements at private sector workplaces. The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services administers the safety and health inspection requirements for public sector workplaces.
