Virginia has adopted the federal requirements for written safety plans for specific activities (e.g., bloodborne pathogens exposure control plan, hazard communication plan) and for specific hazardous substances in both private and public (state and local government) sector workplaces.
The state requires self-insurers under the workers’ compensation rules to establish loss prevention programs.
The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry’s Occupational Safety and Health program administers safety and health rules in public and private sector workplaces. The Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission administers the safety loss control program for self-insurers.
